Adjara in context

Reading the data

What the figures say, and what they don't.

Tourism statistics measure people moving. For a single holiday flat they answer only some of the questions.

  1. Travellers, visitors, tourists

Travellers are all arrivals at the border. The survey counts as visitors those travellers aged 15 or over who stay less than a year, excluding workers, diplomats and frequent border crossers. Tourists are visitors who stay overnight; day-trippers are not.

  2. Visits are not people

Someone who comes three times a year counts three times, so visits outnumber individuals. For demand for beds, the relevant figure is tourist visits, those with an overnight stay.

  3. Seasonality

Arrivals at Batumi airport in August 2025 were more than five times those in February. Demand on the coast hinges on the summer. If you buy a holiday flat, budget for long quiet months.

  4. A few source markets

Three neighbouring countries account for more than half of all visits. A change in border rules, flight links or conditions in any one of them is felt along the whole coast.

  5. What the data does not tell you

None of these series measures how often private holiday flats are booked or what they earn. Hotel statistics cover registered establishments and give no occupancy. More visits do not automatically mean more bookings for your flat.

  6. Where to check for yourself

Geostat publishes the Inbound Tourism Statistics quarterly and as an annual figure. GNTA reports border crossings by nationality. For the region itself, Adjara's Tourism Department is the body to ask. Check the method and period of any source before you compare figures.
