Batumi climate. Heavy rain, humid air and how owners deal with both.

In short

Batumi receives about 2,500 millimetres of rain a year, spread over 150 to 170 rainy days. Relative humidity in Adjara usually sits between 70 and 90%. Autumn is the wettest season and spring the driest. For owners that means airing, dehumidifying and having an empty flat looked after in winter.

The climate figures

A flat that stays locked for months over winter needs someone to air it and check on it.

What the measurements show.

The figures come from Adjara's 2013 climate change strategy, based on long-term measurements. For official measurements today, the body to ask is the National Environmental Agency.

For owners

What the climate means for your flat.

In Batumi, damp is not a defect of the building but part of daily life. Plan for it and you avoid much of the damage.

  1. Airing and dehumidifying

Open the windows wide for a few minutes when it is dry outside, and keep them shut in the rain. Many owners use the dry mode on the air conditioning or a dehumidifier, plus an extractor fan in the bathroom.

  2. The empty flat in winter

A locked flat does not air itself. Arrange for someone to air it regularly, check windows and walls, and empty or check a dehumidifier fitted with a drain hose. Leave wardrobe doors slightly open.

  3. Sea-facing facades

Wind drives rain against the seaward side and carries salt with it. At handover, check window seals, the joints around the balcony and the balcony drain. Metal in railings and frames should be suitable for coastal air.

  4. Fitting out with damp in mind

When finishing a white-frame flat, choose damp-resistant materials in the bathroom, plan ventilation outlets and leave space for a dehumidifier with a drain. Wooden floors and wallpaper need more care in a flat that is rarely used.

  5. Laundry and fabrics

Washing dries slowly in humid air. A tumble dryer or a sheltered spot on the balcony helps. In a holiday flat, bedding and cushions are best stored in closed boxes.

  6. Life out of season

The city runs on the beach season. More than five times as many passengers arrived at the airport in August 2025 as in February. In winter many holiday flats stand empty, beach bars close and the city is quiet. If you plan to live there all year, spend a winter there first.
