Working remotely from Georgia. No nomad visa, but a visa-free year.

In short

The German Foreign Office lists no dedicated digital nomad visa for Georgia, and the immigration law firm Fragomen reported that the 2020 Remotely from Georgia programme was suspended in 2022. EU and UK citizens can stay without a visa for up to a year. Registered individual entrepreneurs can apply for small business status: 1% tax on turnover up to GEL 500,000 a year, though not every activity qualifies. Whether you remain taxable at home depends on your home country's law.

The rules at a glance

For many remote workers, renting is the better choice in the first year. Buying makes sense once you know you will stay or keep coming back.

Remotely from Georgia

The programme was launched in 2020, when the borders were closed to tourists. It let remote workers in if they could show income and insurance. The immigration law firm Fragomen reported its suspension in 2022. The government published no official notice, and the former programme page is no longer online. Ask a Georgian consulate for the current position before a long stay.

Visa-free stay

Citizens of the EU, Switzerland, the UK and many other countries enter without a visa and can stay for up to a year; the German Foreign Office gives 360 days for German citizens. Since 1 January 2026 you need health and accident insurance with at least GEL 30,000 of cover on entry. According to the German Foreign Office, Georgia requires a residence permit for employment or self-employment in the country, applied for before the visa-free period ends. The Foreign Office does not say whether remote work for an employer or clients abroad counts. Before a long stay, check this with the Public Service Hall or a Georgian lawyer.

Tax residency

Spending at least 183 days in Georgia within any twelve consecutive months makes you tax resident there. Your tax liability at home does not end automatically. Our guide to tax residency covers the details.

Individual entrepreneur with small business status

Individual entrepreneurs register in the Registry of Entrepreneurs and then apply for the status with the Revenue Service. Turnover is then taxed at 1%. If it exceeds GEL 500,000 in a calendar year, the rate rises to 3%. If turnover is above that limit in two calendar years, the status ends from the following year. Government Ordinance No. 415 on special tax regimes lists the excluded activities. Check yours there or with the Revenue Service before you register. Returns are due monthly, by the 15th of the following month.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from remote workers.

Visa, the 1% tax, tax residency and housing.

Does Georgia have a digital nomad visa?

Not at present. The German Foreign Office lists none, and the immigration law firm Fragomen reported that the 2020 Remotely from Georgia programme was suspended in 2022. Citizens of the EU, the UK and many other countries enter visa-free for up to a year.

How does Georgia's 1% tax work?

It applies to individual entrepreneurs with small business status. They pay 1% income tax on turnover. If it exceeds GEL 500,000 in a calendar year, the rate rises to 3%. Certain activities are excluded; Government Ordinance No. 415 lists them. Individuals pay a separate 5% on residential rental income.

Does that mean I stop paying tax at home?

Georgia does not decide that. Germany normally keeps taxing you in full as long as you have a home or your habitual abode there, and the UK applies its statutory residence test. Take advice on your own case before you move.

Should a digital nomad buy a flat in Georgia?

Probably not in the first year. Buying suits people who will stay several years, or who return regularly and want to let the flat in between. From USD 150,000 in market value, ownership can support a residence permit.
